About Scottish Country Dance
Scottish Country Dance: it's old.....it's new.....it's fun.....it's very social.
Scottish country dance is the traditional dance of Scotland. It's based on ancient folk dances, mixed with elements of ballet, influences from the Royal court of France and some overlap with Scottish Highland dancing. Scottish country dance was carried around the world by Scottish immigrants and Highland regiments. It remains popular world-wide with active groups in unlikely places such as Paris, Japan and Moscow. Some of the dances are over 300 years old. Many are new and cleverly designed to produce beautiful formations. We dance lively jigs and reels and the distinctly Scottish, and very stately, Stathspey. Scottish country dance is great fun for young and old. It involves moderate physical activity and some training on the basic steps and figures. Beginners quickly progress to complete dances. No need to bring a partner and no special clothing or equipment, other than non-marking soft soled shoes, is required....just a joy for dancing! |
